I graduated from Newcastle University in 1997 with a degree in Medical Microbiology and relocated to ˮ�˷� to study for an MSc in Pathological Sciences (University of ˮ�˷�/ˮ�˷� Hallam University, 1999). This was followed by my PhD entitled `The Regulation of Neutrophil Apoptosis by Bacterial Products´ (University of ˮ�˷�, 2000-04) under the supervision of Professor Moira Whyte. In 2004 I was awarded a University of ˮ�˷� Russell Research Fellowship to study the molecular mechanisms of neutrophil activation and apoptosis.

I was appointed to Senior Lecturer in Innate Immunity in 2022.

Inflammation and inflammatory diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or rheumatoid arthritis are extremely difficult to treat effectively. During inflammation, inflammatory cells, in particular neutrophils and monocytes, are thought to be key mediators of both tissue damage and perpetuation of further inflammatory signalling. My research focuses on the role of neutrophils during infection and inflammation and how their inflammatory potential and function is regulated by cell death programme, in particular, apoptosis and NETosis. We are currently studying whether an orally active protein kinase C beta inhibitor (ruboxistaurin) and a clinical EGFR/ErbB inhibitor (neratinib) have therapeutic potential in lung and cardiovascular diseases.

My group also studies how the neutrophilic immune response is subverted by pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus via the Florey Institute for host-pathogen interactions.

My research has been supported by the British Lung Foundation, the Medical Research Council, the Rosetrees Trust, Asthma UK, Dunhill Medical Trust and ˮ�˷� (including the HELSI Institute).
